West Africa and the Sahel are among the most climate vulnerable regions in the world. Greater knowledge of climate change and better skills to deal with its impacts will be crucial to reduce the region’s vulnerability and to adapt. Since 2019, the UN CC:Learn Hub in West Africa supports current and future professionals in 13 countries across the Sahel to be better prepared to tackle the climate crisis.

The West African Hub on Climate Change Learning

The West African Hub is a platform to foster the sharing of country experiences developing and implementing national climate change learning strategies and to promote climate change learning. This platform is part of the framework for the implementation of Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) and the Doha work programme on Article 6 of the UNFCCC in accordance with Article 12 of the Paris Agreement.

Together with our regional partner, the AGRHYMET Regional Centre, we are developing a range of activities to support learning among professionals from government departments and agencies, civil society, research and academic institutions, and the private sector in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Togo.

Our West African Hub’s activities include:

  • Running capacity building, training and experience sharing workshops on climate change-related topics;
  • Developing e-learning modules, resources on climate change adapted to the West African context;
  • Identifying priority issues for the region and relevant funding mechanisms; and
  • Supporting the development of project proposals for climate change learning.

Our Regional Partners

We are working with the AGRHYMET Regional Centre (ARC), a specialised institution of the Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS). ARC is a leading centre in training and information on food security, water management, climate change and the fight against desertification in the Sahel and West Africa.
